So This Baby Crawls Into a Bar

It’s no secret homemade baby food is more nutritious than its store bought brethren — which can languish on store shelves for years before being eaten — but most parents don’t have the time or energy to whip up their own mushy concoctions. As a result, a few homemade baby food enterprises are stepping up to the plate. Right here in our neck of the woods, we’ve got Oakland-based Little Bug Baby Food (littlebugbaby.com) which crafts its concoctions from local, seasonal, just-harvested ingredients and San Jose’s Baby Cubes And More (baby-cubes.com), which proffers frozen cubes of organic fruits and veggies in stores around the Bay Area.

But down in LA, one momprenueur is taking this new business trend a step further. At Newport Beach, Calif.-based pomme bébé (intentionally lowercase) babies can belly up to the in-house “tasting bar” and sink their gums into delicious seasonal, organic puree lovingly prepared by French-born executive chef Laurent Brazier.

Owner and mother Svetla Kibota wanted to create a space for babies and parents alike to try before they buy. “A lot of people think of baby food as something that’s gross, and it really shouldn’t be,” says Kibota. “It should be the most delicious and fresh thing you’ve ever served.” Some parents are so surprised how good the homemade food is, she says, that they have to buy extra — because they want some for themselves.

With baby bars sprouting up in the City of Angels, we’re doubting San Francisco will be far behind.
